The Cost of a Pound of Meat

The cost of the energy needed to produce a pound of meat is about 10 times greater than the cost of energy to produce a pound of grain or vegetables.

For example, it takes one and a half to two years for a cow to grow up and be ready for market. During that time the animal has to be fed and it takes energy to grow the food that it eats. By the way, cows have really good appetites-they eat a lot of food. The cow then needs to be taken to market that takes energy to get it there and then there’s the processing and then the transportation to the grocery store and then the freezer to keep the meat fresh. All these steps take energy.

Vegetables, especially if they are locally grown, require far less energy to get them to your dinner table. Not too many cows are raised locally whereas many people have vegetable gardens.

I wonder how much of the cost you pay for your steaks or chops or ground beef is a result of the cost of energy to bring that meat to your dinner table?

Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.

He had a pretty good summer also.
